Altenahr is a charming town in the heart of the Ahr valley, known mainly for the ruins of Are Castle, which towers above the vineyards. Since the 12th century, the castle guarded trade routes; today it is a popular tourist destination with magnificent views of the meanders of the Ahr River and the surrounding wine terraces.
Wine lovers will appreciate the local specialty – red Ahr wine, especially Spätburgunder. In the village you will find many traditional wineries, and autumn wine festivals attract visitors for tastings. For active relaxation, there are marked hiking trails such as the Rotweinwanderweg, and cycle paths along the river.
For Czech tourists, Altenahr is easily accessible; from Prague or Brno, drive via the motorway through Frankfurt and Cologne, or take a train from Bonn. Accommodation is offered by family-run guesthouses with half-board. After the devastating flood in 2021, reconstruction is underway, but tourism is returning and local winemakers welcome visitors with typical hospitality.
