The Alpsee is a mountain lake with crystal-clear water, nestled in the picturesque Allgäu region in southern Bavaria. It lies in the immediate vicinity of the fairy-tale castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, whose silhouettes are reflected on the water. The lake was formed as a glacial lake, and its surroundings are crisscrossed by a network of hiking trails that offer magnificent views of the surrounding alpine peaks.
For Czech tourists, the Alpsee is an ideal destination for both a day trip and a longer stay. In summer, it invites swimming, sailing, and hiking – the popular circular trail around the lake (approx. 5 km) offers a viewpoint overlooking Neuschwanstein Castle. In winter, it provides a romantic atmosphere with views of snow-covered peaks. There is a boat rental and several restaurants serving Bavarian cuisine by the lake.
We recommend parking in the village of Hohenschwangau, from where the lake is just a few minutes' walk away. It is advisable to combine the visit with a tour of the royal castles, for which advance reservation is required. Don't forget your swimsuit and camera – the golden hour at the Alpsee is among the most beautiful in the entire Allgäu region.
