Almbachklamm

About this place

A wild alpine gorge with waterfalls, bridges, and trails carved into the rock. One of the most beautiful natural experiences in the Berchtesgaden region.

Almbachklamm is a breathtaking mountain gorge near Marktschellenberg in the Berchtesgaden region. Over thousands of years, the rapidly flowing Almbach stream has carved a narrow rock cleft, which was opened to the public as early as the 19th century. Wooden bridges, tunnels, and steps attached to the rock lead you past cascading waterfalls and wild rapids.

A walk through the gorge is an unforgettable experience: crystal-clear water roars in deep pools, while sheer limestone walls tower high above you. A total of 29 bridges span the raging torrent, ensuring a safe passage. The route is about 3 km long, and the ascent takes approximately 1.5–2 hours. It is advisable to wear waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear.

For Czech tourists, Almbachklamm is easily accessible – it lies just a few kilometers from the border (Winkl/Steinpass crossing). Park at Gasthof Almbachklamm and set off along the paid trail uphill. At the top, a mountain meadow awaits you with refreshments and a beautiful view. You can return via a comfortable forest path. It is open from May to October, and the ideal time to visit is on a weekday outside the main season, when there are fewer people.
