Go meet nearly 200 Barbary macaques in a wooded park on Lake Constance. A unique experience for the whole family, where monkeys roam freely and you can feed them.
Affenberg Salem is located near the famous Lake Constance, in the middle of the picturesque landscape of Baden-Württemberg. This unique forest park was founded in 1976 and has since become home to the largest colony of Barbary macaques outside Africa – currently there are around 200 monkeys. In addition to monkeys, the park is also home to a large colony of white storks, so from spring to autumn you can also observe their nests with chicks.
The main attraction is a walk through the forest, where the macaques move completely freely and come to visitors without hesitation. You can feed them special food (popcorn) sold at the entrance. The monkey community is strictly hierarchical and observing their social behavior is fascinating – from the play of young to the fights of dominant males. Don't forget to also visit the information pavilion with an exhibition about the life and protection of monkeys.
For Czech tourists, Affenberg is a great trip – from the Czech Republic you can drive here in about 5–6 hours. The park is open daily from March to November (winter break due to cold). We recommend sturdy footwear, the terrain is hilly in places. There is a snack bar and picnic areas on site. Caution: monkeys are curious and can be quick – keep an eye on your personal belongings and store food in closed backpacks!
