Červené jezero (Crveno jezero)

About this place

Breathtaking karst lake with crystal clear red water, one of the deepest in Europe, surrounded by steep limestone walls.

Crveno jezero, also known as Červené jezero, is one of the most remarkable natural phenomena in Croatia. It is located near the town of Imotski in the interior of Central Dalmatia. This karst lake was formed by the collapse of a cave ceiling and today forms a deep rocky basin filled with crystal clear water. Due to the reddish shades of the surrounding limestone walls, it got its characteristic name.

With a total depth of over 500 meters (of which about 280 meters is water column), it is among the deepest of its kind in Europe. Its dimensions are impressive – the diameter of the basin reaches about 200 meters. Several legends are told around the lake; one tells of a sunken settlement that once collapsed into the depths. The water in the lake is incredibly clear, but swimming is not allowed due to the steep and unstable rock walls.

For visitors, there is a viewpoint offering a panoramic view of the lake and its surroundings. We recommend comfortable sturdy shoes and caution, especially with children or in wet conditions. Nearby is also the Blue Lake (Modro jezero), which is more accessible and popular for swimming. Together they form a unique natural complex, ideal for a day trip from the Makarska Riviera or Split.
