Cavtat is a picturesque historic town on the southern coast of Croatia, located just 20 km southeast of Dubrovnik. Originally the ancient settlement of Epidaurum, which gave rise to Dubrovnik itself, it still retains its medieval charm with narrow stone streets, Renaissance palaces and a beautiful palm-lined waterfront. The town is surrounded by quiet coves and pine forests, making it an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and cultural experiences.
Main sights include the Rector's Palace with a small museum, the Baroque church of St. Nicholas with valuable paintings, and especially the Račić family mausoleum by world-famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović – a beautiful domed building of white stone towering on a hill above the cemetery. A walk along the seaside promenade leads to a number of beaches, from pebble to rocky, with crystal clear water. From the harbor, boats depart for excursions to Dubrovnik and nearby islands such as Mrkan or Bobara.
For Czech tourists, Cavtat is accessible by car via the Adriatic highway or by bus from Dubrovnik. In summer, a regular ferry line operates offering stunning views of Dubrovnik's walls. Accommodation ranges from family apartments to luxury hotels, with prices slightly lower than in Dubrovnik. Don't forget to taste local specialties such as black risotto or grilled octopus in one of the restaurants with a sea view.
