Bodamské jezero – Bregenz
Picturesque town on the shores of Lake Constance, famous for its opera festivals and beautiful promenade.
The famous floating stage of the Bregenz Festival with impressive stage constructions on the shores of Lake Constance.
The Lake Stage in Bregenz is one of the largest and most remarkable open-air theatres in the world. Since 1946, the renowned Bregenz Festival (Bregenzer Festspiele) has been held here every summer, dominated by a monumental floating stage anchored directly on the surface of Lake Constance. For each opera production, an original set design is created, often using the lake as a natural backdrop – the most iconic include a giant skeleton for the production of 'André Chénier' or a sailing ship for 'Tosca'.
The festival offers not only opera performances but also drama productions and concerts. For Czech visitors, Bregenz is easily accessible by car (from the Czech Republic via Germany or Austria, about 5–6 hours from Prague) or by train with a transfer in Zurich or Munich. We recommend booking tickets in advance, especially for open-air operas, or taking advantage of daily tours of the stage without performances. Festival ticket prices range from 30 to 200 euros depending on the category.
The surroundings of the stage invite walks along the promenade with views of the Alps, a visit by cable car to Mount Pfänder, or relaxation on the beaches of Lake Constance. In Bregenz itself, the historic upper town and the modern Kunsthaus are also worth seeing. Don't forget to try local specialties such as cheese spaetzle (Käsespätzle) and fish from the lake.
