Bregenz (Lake Constance)
Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg, lies on the shores of Lake Constance. It offers unique cultural experiences including the famous Bregenz Festival on the lake stage.
The famous floating stage on Lake Constance hosts unique open-air opera performances with monumental sets.
The Bregenz Lake Stage (Seebühne) is one of the most iconic open-air theatres in the world. Located on the shores of Lake Constance in the Austrian city of Bregenz, it hosts the Bregenz Festival (Bregenzer Festspiele) every summer. Its main attraction is the spectacular opera productions performed on a giant floating stage directly on the water, seating up to 7,000 spectators.
The festival's history dates back to 1946, when it was founded after World War II as a symbol of cultural renewal. Since then, dozens of productions have been staged here, famous for their extravagant sets – such as a giant skeleton, an eye, or a ship. Every two years, a new stage design is built, becoming a landmark of the lake landscape.
For Czech tourists, Bregenz is easily accessible – just a few hours' drive from the border, ideally via Linz or Salzburg. Besides performances, we recommend a walk along the lakeside promenade, a cable car ride up Mount Pfänder for views of the lake and the Alps, or a visit to the historic upper town. Tickets for the festival must be booked well in advance, but even without them, it's worth seeing the stage from the outside during rehearsals or evening illumination.
