Bregenz (Lake Stage)
The famous floating stage on Lake Constance hosts unique open-air opera performances with monumental sets.
Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg, lies on the shores of Lake Constance. It offers unique cultural experiences including the famous Bregenz Festival on the lake stage.
Bregenz, a charming Austrian town on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, is the capital of the federal state of Vorarlberg. Its history dates back to Roman times, when the settlement Brigantium was founded. Today, Bregenz is a modern cultural center that attracts thousands of visitors annually, mainly due to the Bregenz Festival – a unique music and theater festival with a giant floating stage directly on the lake surface.
In addition to the festival, the historic upper town (Oberstadt) with its narrow streets, the Martinsturm with a magnificent view, and the Baroque town hall are worth a visit. Nature lovers will appreciate the cable car ride up to Mount Pfänder (1064 m), which offers a breathtaking panorama of Lake Constance and the Alps. A walk along the lakeside promenade, cycling trips to nearby towns (e.g., Lindau in Germany), or a boat trip to Mainau Island or Swiss Romanshorn are popular activities.
For Czech tourists, Bregenz is easily accessible by car via the D1 and A1 motorways or by train with a change in Linz or Salzburg. Parking in the city center is available in paid garages; we recommend using P+R parking lots on the outskirts. Accommodation ranges from hotels to lakeside campsites. The best time to visit is summer (June–August) during the festival, but also autumn with its colorful vineyards and a calmer atmosphere.
