Bad Gastein is one of the most famous Austrian spa towns, located at an altitude of over 1000 meters in the Gasteinertal valley. Its landmark is the mighty Gasteiner Wasserfall, which plunges right through the center of the town, creating an unforgettable backdrop. The renowned thermal springs with radioactive radon have attracted visitors since the 19th century, when European high society, including Empress Sisi, came here.
The town is a textbook example of Belle Époque architecture – grand hotels, spa houses, and villas are everywhere, giving Bad Gastein a unique atmosphere. Also worth seeing are the St. Nicholas Church and the historic spa park. In winter, the region turns into a ski paradise with modern lifts and slopes for all levels, while in summer it offers countless hiking trails with views of the Tauern peaks.
For Czech tourists, Bad Gastein is accessible by car in about 4 hours from Prague or by train with a transfer in Salzburg. In town, we recommend visiting the Felsentherme thermal baths with heated outdoor pools and tasting local specialties in traditional alpine restaurants. Don't forget your camera – the views from the bridge over the waterfall are breathtaking.
