Altausseer See lies in the heart of the Salzkammergut, surrounded by the imposing Loser massif. Its crystal-clear water and magnificent mountain panorama attract visitors from spring to autumn. The site is popular for swimming, canoeing, or romantic cruises on electric boats.
Historically, the lake is linked to salt mining, but it is also famous for the legend of a Nazi treasure. At the end of World War II, valuables including gold bars and artworks were supposedly hidden here. Even today, reports occasionally emerge of divers searching for the mythical crate.
For Czech tourists, Altausseer See is easily accessible – it lies just a few kilometers from Bad Aussee, which can be reached by car in a few hours. At the lake, there are public beaches with gentle water entry, boat rentals, and numerous hiking trails. We recommend a hike up Loser (1,838 m) with breathtaking views or a walk around the entire lake (approx. 7 km). Parking is charged, but free spots can be found nearby.
