Altausseer See is a picturesque mountain lake in the Salzkammergut, surrounded by majestic Alps. Its crystal-clear water and tranquil atmosphere invite relaxation, swimming, and romantic walks.
Altausseer See lies in a scenic valley between the Totes Gebirge and Loser in the Austrian Salzkammergut. The lake, covering about 2.1 km² with a maximum depth of over 70 meters, is of glacial origin and features a beautiful blue-green color due to the limestone bedrock. It is considered one of the most beautiful alpine lakes.
Since the 19th century, it has attracted artists, writers, and composers such as Gustav Mahler and Peter Altenberg. Today, it is a popular resort offering swimming, boat and pedal boat rides, and serving as a starting point for hikes in the surrounding mountains. The nearby Salzwelten Altaussee salt mine, where salt has been mined for centuries, is also worth a visit.
For Czech travelers, Altaussee is accessible by car via Linz and Liezen (about 4.5 hours from Prague), or by train to Bad Aussee station with a bus transfer. An easy hiking trail (about 7 km) around the lake is suitable for families with children. The lake water remains cool even in summer (usually up to 22°C), but the beaches offer sunbathing and refreshments. Parking is available on the northern shore.
