Alpbach

About this place

The picturesque Alpine village of Alpbach, famous for its uniform wooden architecture, is an ideal starting point for hiking and skiing.

Alpbach, often called "the most beautiful village in Austria," lies in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps in Tyrol. Its characteristic feature is the meticulously maintained wooden houses adorned with abundant flower boxes on balconies, creating a unique harmony with the surrounding nature. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1150, but archaeological finds prove settlement already in the Bronze Age. The local architectural style, known as "Alpbacher style," has become a model for many other Alpine resorts.

Alpbach is a popular destination both in summer and winter. In summer, it offers a network of marked hiking trails, such as the ascent to Mount Gratlspitz (1,900 m above sea level) with panoramic views, or walks along the Flower Trail. In winter, the area turns into a ski paradise with access to the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, which includes 145 km of slopes. The village is also known for the international "European Forum Alpbach," which annually attracts politicians, scientists, and artists.

For Czech tourists, Alpbach is accessible by car via Munich and Innsbruck (approx. 450 km from Prague) or by train to Brixlegg station with subsequent bus transport. Accommodation is best found in traditional family guesthouses, ideally with advance booking. We recommend trying Tyrolean specialties such as Kasnocken or Kaiserschmarrn, and visiting the local farmers' market with regional products. Given the altitude of around 1,000 m, we advise preparing for cooler weather even in summer.
